The Bastille area
The Bastille district unfurls around the Place de la Bastille, and lies on the border between the eleventh and the twelfth arrondissement. Between the opera of the same name, and the Saint-Martin Canal, this northeastern area of the capital, marked by the memory of the infamous old prison, is now the scene of a thriving nightlife.
This area of the eleventh arrondissement is famous for its lively night clubs, but is also well-known for its burgeoning property market, when many units were renovated in the eighties and nineties. Today, its many attractively priced hotels are popular with parisians and tourists, making this one of the most populous and the most dynamic in the capital.
Lodgis have selected the best apartments in the Bastille area of Paris.
These apartments have been visited and checked by our staff to ensure that your stay in Paris is as enjoyable as possible.
Discover the Bastille area
Between the eleventh and twelfth arrondissement, the Place de la Bastille is a major Parisian tourist attraction, and the meeting point for many night owls, who come to enjoy the lively neighbourhood.
Lovers of culture and the performing arts are also drawn to the quarter, attracted by the programmes of the Opera Bastille, as well as students of music and dance. The Bastille métro station, which serves three metro lines, is an important thoroughfare, and is also an interesting place for the curious to look around as it is the location of the last surviving remains of the original prison.
You can see other traces of the ancient fortress in the triple row of cobblestones in the southern part of the Place de la Bastille, facing the Saint-Martin canal. Overlooking the square, is the July Column, built in the nineteenth century on the site of the old guillotine, to celebrate Les Trois Glorieuses- the three days in July 1830 that saw the downfall of King Charles X and the dawn of a new era.
The Place de la Bastille is still the centre of many popular - and thankfully more peaceful!- rallies and demonstrations; every Sunday afternoon, for example, members of the famous Rollers and Coquillages Skate Club race around the square,- many regard the hugely popular event as the best organised skate in the world!
The Bastille district has many terraced cafés on the surrounding streets, especially on the Rues of Lappe, Roquette and Charonne, the location of the coolest bars and nightclubs in the capital that are filled with partygoers. The Bastille is definitely the hottest place to go if you want to experience Parisian nightlife and party from dusk to dawn. There are also many restaurants offering a variety of different cuisines, including Thai, Moroccan and South American.
The Bastille area has so many positive features. With Lodgis you can discover Paris from another perspective by staying in the best apartments in the neighbourhood.
